Functional / or Skills Based Resume

A Functional or Skills Based Resume has several advantages over a reverse chronological format, but also disadvantages. It's ideal for those who want to summarise professional skills and have less emphasis on work history.

When to use a skills bases resume:

  • If you are looking to change careers and want to transfer skills.
  • Ideal for those with a patchy work history.
  • Good for highlighting skills which can be tailored towards the job advertisement.
  • Useful for graduates who have only a limited amount (if any) employment history.
  • When you need to emphasis key skills which are buried in the resume job descriptions.

What to watch out for:

  • This is an unusual format and not liked by everyone.
  • Only a limited number of employers/recruiters will accept this type of format.
