Behavioural interviewing
Behavioural interview questions are designed to see how you will perform in future situations, based on your past performance.
If you hear the phrase... "Give me an example of a time when you..." or "Describe a situation in which you...", then you can be pretty sure that you are now entering into a behavioural interview.
Some of these questions can seem a little uncomfortable at first, but if you plan for them, you will overcome a major hurdle in the interview race.
Common examples
"Tell me about a time when you missed an obvious solution to a problem. How did you overcome this?"
"Give me an example of a time when you were not able to meet a goal or target. How did you feel?"
"Give me a specific example of a time when you used good judgment and logic in solving a problem"
"Tell me about a time when you had to use your negotiation skills to influence someone's opinion?"
"Give me a specific example of a time when you had to conform to a policy with which you did not agree."
"What is your typical way of dealing with conflict? Give me an example"
"Give me an example of when you showed initiative and took the lead."
Have you ever been forced into making an unpopular decision. What were the circumstances, and how did this resolve itself?
Important notes
Notice how many of the questions can easily fool the person being interviewed into providing a negative answer.
Always answer clearly, but avoid giving too much minor detail. Avoid naming names, and think about how you can provide a positive answer or resolution.
Once you get the hang of answering the questions above, try to think of other questions you might be asked, and you'll start to notice how quickly you can develop a positive style.
ALWAYS PLAN AND PREPARE. Take notes in with you to the interview if you like, no one will hold this against you. Try taking a few bullet points as a memory jog.
